The Section (formerly a department) was established in 1953. Its main task is to prepare and publish the Polish historical bibliography of the 19th and 20th centuries, continuing the work initiated by Ludwik Finkel. The members of the section present the output of Polish historians produced after 1815, aiming to provide a comprehensive database of all writings concerning the history of Poland.

Currently, the team is working on Vol. III: ‘1865–1918. Periodicals, pamphlets, calendars’. Fasc. 4: ‘Polish émigrés and diaspora’. The bibliography is primary and annotated. Therefore the bibliographical data contained in the volume are obtained first-hand and the descriptions include notes on the history of the given periodical together with references to published materials concerning the periodical from its foundation to the present day.
Such a task requires extensive queries not only in a significant number of Polish academic libraries, but also in the libraries and archives abroad (e.g. in Paris, London, Chicago and Minneapolis), which hold in their collections a fair number of issues unavailable in Poland.
Preparing this volume is funded by the National Program for the Development of Humanities, and is carrying out by Stefan Gąsiorowski, Assistant Prof. (leader), Aleksandra Bańkowska, PhD, Marlena Kapica-Jezierska, MA, Elżbieta Nowosielska, PhD, Katarzyna Sulej, MA, and Adrianna Sznapik, PhD. A. Bańkowska, E. Nowosielska and K. Sulej are working on Polish-language periodicals, additionally E. Nowosielska specializes on pamphlets, K. Sulej – calendars, M. Kapica-Jezierska and A. Sznapik – periodical-related literature. The grant will also result in the publication of a monograph on the history of the émigré press. This publication will include i. a. a statistical analysis of the Polish émigré press, a description of the Polish journalists as a group, the working methods of the editorial offices, and a chapter devoted to printing houses and their employees.
Next years the team plans to start working on volumes collecting information on the reports of various organisations operating in the Polish lands between 1865 and 1918.
Also the database covering all published volumes of Bibliography is created and constantly complemented. Currently only Fasc. 3 is available online, which contains periodicals, pamphlets and calendars from 1865 to 1918 printed in territory of Polish lands under Austrian partition and Polish-language periodicals published in other parts of Austria-Hungary.
Since July 2022, thanks to a grant from the Science for Society program (project leader: E. Nowosielska), the team has been compiling a database of Polish emigration journalists and printers. In the future, the collected materials will be used to create the Dictionary of Emigration Journalists, Editors and Printers in the Years 1865–1918.
The team members are also engaged in individual projects based on the materials obtained during the bibliographic work.
